Verso — Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
Verso keeps your library and reading activity on your device. We built it to need as little of your information as possible, and we never sell it. The only time your content leaves your device is when you choose to use an optional cloud AI feature (Verso AI).
The short version
Your books, reading progress, notes, highlights, saved words and settings are stored only on your device. There is no account to sign in to, and we keep no copy of your library. We do not sell your data, show ad-network ads, or bundle third-party analytics or tracking tools.
The one exception is the optional Verso AI features. When you tap one — a smart summary, Ask-the-book, or a smart quiz — the specific text you ask about is sent to our AI service to generate the answer. Nothing is sent unless you ask for it, and the free on-device AI never leaves your device. See “Verso AI” below.
What is stored on your device
- Your library and the book files you import
- Reading progress and reading-time sessions
- Bookmarks, highlights and notes
- Saved vocabulary words
- App settings and reading preferences
- If you turn on App Lock, your passcode — stored only as a salted, one-way hash, never the digits themselves
You can delete all of it at any time from Account → Erase all data.
When Verso uses the internet
Only for features you choose to use. For most of these the request goes straight to a third party; Verso AI is the exception, where it goes to a small service we run:
- Verso AI (Pro): smart summaries, Ask-the-book and smart quizzes send the relevant text to our AI service. See “Verso AI” below.
- Discover: browsing or downloading free books, papers and articles sends requests to the public catalogs (Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Unglue.it, Internet Archive, arXiv). Cover images load from those sources.
- Saving a web article: the page you paste a link to is fetched so it can be saved for offline reading.
- Translation: Google ML Kit may download a language model the first time, then works offline.
- Read-aloud uses your device's built-in text-to-speech.
- Affiliate store links: tapping “Get this book” opens an outside store in your browser. See “Affiliate links to stores” below.
Those services handle requests under their own privacy policies.
Verso AI (optional cloud features)
Verso's free AI — extractive summaries and basic quizzes — runs entirely on your device and never sends anything anywhere. The Pro AI features run in the cloud, and this is the one part of Verso where your content leaves your device. Here is exactly what happens:
- It is opt-in, per action. Nothing is sent until you tap a cloud AI button.
- What is sent: the relevant passage(s) of the material — for a chapter summary, that chapter's text; for Ask-the-book, the most relevant excerpts plus your question. Not your whole library.
- Where it goes: over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to a proxy we operate, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (currently Google's Gemini API) that generates the result under its own privacy terms.
- What we keep: our service logs only technical metadata — request type, text length, token counts, cost and timing — never your text, your question, or the AI's answer. A generated result may be cached briefly, then deleted automatically.
- Our proxy runs on a hosting provider (Cloudflare) that may record basic connection details such as your IP address and the request time at its network edge, under its own privacy policy, to deliver and protect the service.
- No account is required today, so these requests are not tied to your identity.
Please don't put anything into an AI feature that you wouldn't want processed by a third-party AI service, and remember AI answers can be wrong.
Affiliate links to stores
Discover and the book detail screen can show “Get this book” links to outside stores (for example Amazon, Kobo, Bookshop.org, eBooks.com and others). These are affiliate links: if you buy something after tapping one, Verso may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, Verso earns from qualifying purchases.
- The link always opens in your browser or the store's own app — never inside Verso.
- We may add a store-specific tag to the link so the store can credit the sale to Verso. We do not send the store your name, your library or any profile — there is none to send.
- Once you are on the store's site you are under that store's own privacy policy and terms, including any cookies or tracking it uses. We do not control that.
- Books bought from most major stores are protected (DRM) and can only be read in that store's own app. Only a book a store delivers as an unprotected file can be imported into Verso.
What we do not do
- No account or sign-in
- No ad networks, banner ads or pop-ups (the affiliate store links above are not ad-network ads and use no tracking SDK)
- No analytics, tracking or fingerprinting SDKs
- No selling or renting of your data — and no sharing of it, other than the text you explicitly send to Verso AI to fulfil that request
- No location access
Permissions
Internet access is used only for the optional features above. Files are read through the system file picker, only for the books you choose to import.
Children's privacy
Verso does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, because it collects no personal information at all. Note that some Discover titles are public-domain literature intended for adult readers.
Your controls
Erase all of your data anytime from Account → Erase all data. Uninstalling Verso also removes everything it stored.
Changes & contact
If our practices ever change, we will update this text and the copy inside the app. Questions about privacy can be sent to support@verso.app.
Verso — Terms of Service
Last updated: June 2026
Plain-language terms for using Verso. By using the app, you agree to these.
Using Verso
Verso is provided free of charge for personal, non-commercial reading on a device you own or control.
Your content
You may import only books and documents that you own or otherwise have the legal right to read. You are responsible for the content you add. Verso does not host or supply that content — it simply opens files that are already on your device.
Discover content
Discover links to books, papers and articles from public-domain, open-access and openly-licensed sources (Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Unglue.it, Internet Archive, and arXiv for open-access papers). Public-domain, open-access and licensing status can vary by country, so availability and your rights may differ where you live — please check your local law before reusing anything you download.
Affiliate links & buying books
Some screens show links to outside book stores. These are affiliate links: Verso may earn a commission if you buy after tapping one, at no extra cost to you (as an Amazon Associate, Verso earns from qualifying purchases). The link opens the store externally; any purchase is a transaction solely between you and that store, under its prices, terms and privacy policy. Verso is not the seller, does not process the payment, and is not responsible for the order, delivery, refunds or support. Books from most major stores are DRM-protected and can only be read in that store's app, not in Verso.
Verso AI
Some AI features run in the cloud and are currently offered as a beta (“Verso AI”/Pro). They require an internet connection, may be rate-limited or change over time, and send the text you choose to a third-party AI provider for processing (see the Privacy Policy). AI output is generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete or biased; it is not professional, legal, medical, financial or factual advice. Use your own judgement and verify anything important.
No warranty
Verso is provided “as is”, without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any particular book will be available.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Verso and its makers are not liable for any indirect or consequential damages, or for loss of data. Please keep your own copies of anything important — use Export where available.
Changes
We may update these terms from time to time; continued use of the app means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the app's publisher is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
